Today, our dentists in Winnipeg discuss family dentistry and how we help kids, teens, adults, and seniors maintain healthy smiles.
How Dental Services Change as We Age
Kids
Children need regular dental care, to help them establish a solid foundation for lifelong dental health. We offer a comprehensive range of children's dental services at Academy Dental Group.
Beginning with their first appointment (preferably at six months of age) continuing through their school years, we work with them to maintain their healthy smiles. We offer routine exams and cleanings, as well as educate them on proper preventive hygiene techniques every time they visit to make sure their teeth get the appropriate level of care at home.
For children with a higher than average risk of tooth decay, or for those that have special needs or circumstances, we might recommend restorative dental services or customized treatment plans.
Teens
As teens grow and become more independent, their dental care will have to grow with them. Preventive dental care will continue as they see the dentist approximately every 9 months.
As many teens are concerned about their appearance at this age and having a healthy, white smile, we will educate them about the connection between dental hygiene practices and the appearance of their smiles.
If orthodontic care is needed, teens will be referred to an orthodontist for assessment and perhaps require treatment with braces, clear aligners, a retainer, or other appliances.
Adults
Lots of people can develop early-stage gum disease in their adult years, potentially causing painful swollen gums and other dental health problems. Adults should maintain preventive care routines and make oral health a priority, this includes at-home care and regular visits to the dentists for hygiene cleanings.
Many young adults will need to have their wisdom teeth removed. Sometimes, oral surgery, specialized care, appliances, or other treatments will be needed for specific conditions such as sleep apnea or TMJ Disorder.
If restorative services such as crowns, bridges, or fillings are required, we are happy to offer these and address any questions and concerns you may have.
Seniors
As you age, your mouth and teeth will naturally change, and you may also have new needs in terms of medications. This can increase your risk for developing dental health problems, including:
- Dry mouth (caused by medications)
- Tooth decay or cavities
- Need for tooth replacements or dentures
- Gum disease or periodontitis
- Oral cancer
You may notice your teeth are getting less sensitive to things like pain from cavities or hot or cold temperatures. This is because the nerves in your teeth can shrink as you get older. Conversely, if gum tissue recedes this could cause your teeth to become more sensitive as root tissue is left exposed.
The buildup of plaque and wear on your tooth enamel can also leave you susceptible to other problems. A dentist can examine your smile and help address these by recommending appropriate treatments such as dental implants, restorative services, a gum graft, gum therapy or oral surgery.
